Virginia Hamilton

Day 6 & 7: 29 Days of Blackness

Virginia Hamilton

Virginia Hamilton was born on the March 12th, 1936 in Yellow Springs Ohio and passed away on the February 19, 2002. She was born into a family of storytellers and from a young age was told the stories from her grandfather who was born into slavery and escaped via the underground railroad.

Virginia Hamilton, is a name I quickly came to know as a young child.

My first introduction to her work is not the book you would think. My mother read to me The House of Dies Drear.  Listen to the episode to hear my reaction & thoughts of my introduction to her great literary works.

You thought I was going to say:  The People Could Fly: American Black Folktales, right? I mean that only seems natural. It’s the perfect book, aimed at young children.

A few years later, her book titled Many Thousand Gone entered my home library and a few years after that Her Stories: African American Folktales, Fairy Tales, and True Tales.

Many of her novels are highly recommended reading for children and young adult. Here is a link to several of her books on Amazon. Be a good person and share her work with your loved ones.
